Climate Change Daily VId Dec 14 2017:Kenya, government and U.N. help with Coral reefs

Coral reefs stop erosion, and are incredibly biodiverse. Mangroves store carbon and keep rising seas at bay. But U.N. officials say we are losing both at an alarming rate. In Kenya, government and U.N. officials are enlisting locals to help replace what is being lost.

Kenya—Strengthening Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change in Kenya Plus (StARCK+)

Much of Kenya’s economy is based around sectors that are highly climate vulnerable, particularly tourism, arable agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, and livestock. Minor industries that employ significant numbers, such as forestry and coastal and freshwater fisheries, are also sensitive to climate change.

Kenya’s energy sector is highly dependent on hydropower, and therefore it—along with the industry and manufacturing that it powers—is also climate vulnerable. StARCK+ is designed to achieve transformational change by helping Kenya to scale up private sector innovation and investment in low carbon and adaptation products, services, and assets such as clean energy, sustainable agriculture, water management, and weather forecasting.

  •  Facilitated innovative coordination between MFIs, climate specialists, and agricultural supply chain actors resulting in groundbreaking, systemic shifts in agriculture production. Examples include increased uptake of climate resilient crops such as sorghum and cassava, diversified income generation such as utilizing indigenous chicken, and production improvements in dairy and crops that reduce net emissions whilst increasing productivity.

Climate Change Daily VIds Dec 13 2017: Bloomberg and Carney spreading the word

Forget the Trump Administration's stance on Climate Change, Americans, both individuals and companies turn up to Paris Summit to provide support.

The risk is that people aren’t thinking about this sufficiently, and that there’s a bigger adjustment that comes -- you get a climate Minsky moment where there’s much tougher regimes put in place, Carney said in an interview on Bloomberg Television , noting there’s already upheaval in the strategy of German utilities and stemming from the Volkswagen AG emissions scandal.

Nearly 240 firms have signed up to a disclosure campaign led by billionaire Michael Bloomberg and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. The number has more than doubled over the past six months.

Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, said the firms will benefit by demonstrating to employees, customers and shareholders that they are being environmentally friendly, managing climate risks and pursuing climate-related business opportunities. "If the investing public likes what they are doing, they'll get a higher valuation, their stock will go up and [corporate] bonuses will be bigger," he said.

Climate Change Daily Vids Dec 12 2017:Bib Inglis' Son made him believe the Climate Change Facts

Republican politician Bob Inglis used to think that climate change was nonsense; but his son--and science--changed his mind. Today he advocates letting market forces do their work. "The thing to do is to make it apparent in the marketplace what the costs of energy are, and eliminate all the subsidies, and have a level playing field and a strong competition. If you do that, we can fix climate change. That is what needs to be done."

A Conservative Who Believes That Climate Change Is Real
Republican Bob Inglis’ statement that he believed in human-caused climate change helped cost him his seat in Congress. In a Yale Environment 360 interview, Inglis explains why he is now trying to persuade his fellow conservatives that their principles can help save the planet.
Coal-fired electricity causes 23,600 premature deaths each year in the United States. There are over 3 million lost workdays. Those are real and quantifiable costs that aren’t attributed to the cost of electricity at my meter. And so I’m blissfully unaware of the true cost of my electricity. And since it appears so cheap, I don’t innovate because there’s no reason to innovate. I live in South Carolina — I could have a solar hot water heater for example, but I don’t have one. Anyone altruistic would put one on their roof. I would like to be altruistic, but I’ve got two kids in college, and I can’t afford to be altruistic. But if the meter started reflecting the real cost of electricity, I would look at things differently.

Climate Change Daily Vid Dec 11 2017: From France AFD Committed $160B to Fight Climate Change

As part of Climate Finance Day organized in Paris on 11 December, AFD is gathering a panel of international financial experts for its “Mainstreaming!” initiative. The aim is to get investors from all over the world to take greater account of the climate in order to speed up financing for the fight against climate change.

Remy Rioux, chief executive officer at Agence Francaise de Developpement, discusses private funding to fight climate change and the possible impact from Brexit. He speaks with Francine Lacqua

The climate has been a priority for AFD since 2005. Because the climate and development are two interrelated emergencies. Because all over the world, energy and ecological transitions are full of opportunities. Two years after the Paris Agreement, now is the time for action. Climate investments are already underway and result in concrete actions. Alongside our partners, we are seeking to further scale up the movement. So that the investments of today shape the world of tomorrow.

Climate Change Daily Vid Dec 10 2017:Footage of starving polar bear exposes climate change impact

Starving Polar Bear Draws Attention to Climate Change A video of an emaciated polar bear filmed last July near Baffin Island, Nunavut by Paul Nicklen of SeaLegacy has gone viral across social media, putting a face to the challenges polar bears face in a warming Arctic.

“It’s a very sad video—one that’s hard to watch for anyone who cares about wildlife,” said Geoff York, senior director of conservation at Polar Bears International. “In the footage, the bear clearly appears to be on its last legs. It’s in extremely poor body condition and visibly appears to be starving.”

The future for polar bears

Research shows that sea ice retreat, and the reduced hunting opportunities polar bears experience with less ice, already has led to reduced body condition and survival in some polar bear subpopulations.

“When biologists talk about reduced survival, what they are really saying is that more polar bears are starving to death,” said Dr. Steven Amstrup, PBI’s chief scientist. “And this is what starvation looks like.”

Climate Change Daily Vid Dec 5 2017: Barack is back in town - Climate Summit in Chicago.

North American Climate Summit in Chicago.

Chicago hosts the 2017 North American Climate Summit, bringing together Mayors from the U.S., Canada and Mexico to articulate commitments to the Paris Agreement and recognize the impact cities can have in the fight against climate change.

On December 4-6, 2017, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hosted the North American Climate Summit in concert with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy partners, bringing together leaders from the U.S., Canada and Mexico to sign the Chicago Climate Charter and commit to addressing climate change at the local level.

A highlight of the Summit was the 5th annual 2017 C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards luncheon. The ceremony celebrated mayors and cities undertaking the most ambitious and innovative projects to tackle climate change. Given the increasingly important role cities must play in driving climate action in the United States, the Awards will have a special focus on the leadership of U.S. cities on the global stage.

Mayors gathered for the Summit will be invited to make commitments to move forward with significant emissions reductions regardless of action taken by their respective federal governments. Working together, we can harness existing climate goals and create a regional roadmap for climate leadership.

Climate Change Daily VId Dec 4 2017: The Plight of Tropical Forests

Interview with Frances Seymour; Former Senior Fellow for Global Development and author of "Why Forests? Why Now? The Science, Economics, and Politics of Tropical Forests and Climate Change"

Every year, millions of trees are cut from our rainforests to extract oil and raise cattle to make money. These trees are essential for the air we all breathe. The burning of these trees alone contributes to over 15% of greenhouse gasses each year.

Working hand-in-hand with the indigenous communities who have called the rainforest home for millennia, The Rainforest Partnership help communities' sustainable micro-economies to resist deforestation by outside interests. Together we protect the forest.

Climate Change Daily Vid Dec 2 2017:Security & climate change in the Pacific

Security and climate change in the Pacific: from Asia to the US

Since the first George W. Bush administration, the US security community has recognised the national security threats of climate change.

These high-probability, high-impact threats have remained a priority area for action within Congress and the Department of Defense.

The Asia-Pacific region is acutely vulnerable to the security impacts of climate change.

A range of underlying security fragilities and geo-strategic tensions will be shaped by increasingly frequent and severe disasters, impacts to coastal infrastructure and populations, sea level rise altering maritime boundary delimitations, greater food insecurity, and irregular migration flows.

This discussion explored these risks, how US military installations, operations, and strategies in the region may be shaped by them, and their influence on US bilateral and multilateral relationships.

Lord Nicholas Stern

Today’s young people can and should hold their parents’ generation to account for their present actions. They can elicit an emotional response that can motivate action. If thinking about the lives of unborn future generations seems too abstract to motivate you to act, try instead looking a young child or grandchild in the eye and asking yourself what sort of future you are leaving for them. There is something that, on reflection, many adults would surely find repugnant in the idea that they will leave their children a damaged planet that will radically affect their life possibilities. Kiribati President Anote Tong

"…I remember I had been trying to convince him to visit Kiribati and he did in 2011. He came to Kiribati and I remember he went to visit one of these communities that was flooded every time there is very high tides and there was this young boy who stepped up to the Secretary General and said Mr. Secretary General, you are a very important man you know, is there something that you can do to ensure I will have a future, that I will have a home. And the Secretary General came back and he said Mr. President I have been listening to you at the General Assembly but I never truly understood what it was you trying to communicate but now I do and I feel and I understand I would do everything that I can”
