New study makes case for addressing sustainability and climate change when promoting good nutrition
Tara Garnett, who leads the Food Climate Research Network and is co-author on the report, said that there "are key elements that sustainable healthy eating guidelines should incorporate. Meat and dairy products, if eaten, should be consumed in moderation, and at the same time intakes of a diverse range of vegetables, legumes, fruits and unsalted nuts and seeds should increase. Small quantities of fish and seafood are good for health but can be environmentally problematic, so they should be from certified sources to protect the environment. Tap water should be prioritised over bottled drinks, particularly sugary ones."
“Between the new Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris climate agreement, the international community is making a clear push to position sustainability at the heart of planning and decision making,” added Anna Lartey, Director of FAO’s Nutrition and Food Systems Division. “Specifically SDG 2 makes a clear link between the needs for healthy nutrition and sustainable agriculture, and it’s time that dietary guidelines reflect that relationship.”

...we know that pricing carbon in Alberta isn’t going to solve climate change. We know that climate change is a global collective action problem—when we burn fossil fuels, we impose costs (quantified as the social costs of carbon) on others—a burden for which we do not have to pay compensation. This is what economists know as an externality, and it leads to a less efficient overall outcome than you’d have with perfect markets. The Alberta economy, with some of the highest emissions per capita in the world, has benefited significantly from the fact that current and future generations of global citizens can’t easily send us a bill (or sue us costlessly for damages, if you prefer a Coasian view of the world). Economic activity in Alberta emits, on average, 62 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per person per year, which implies a cost imposed on others of $,2800 to $4,500 annually per Albertan using the U.S. government’s central estimates of the social costs of carbon emissions, converted to Canadian dollars.

In 2015 the first nationwide market preference study for the home building industry was conducted. The CHBA report, produced in partnership with Avid Ratings Canada, provides in-depth insight into what homes buyers are looking for – and demonstrates the importance of energy efficiency to today’s homebuyers. 1,581 new homeowners across six provinces of Canada (BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, NB) participated in the study.
